How to Tell What Karat Your Gold Is
Most gold items carry a small stamp-called a hallmark-that shows the purity. These marks are commonly found inside rings, on clasps, or on the back of pendants. A stamp like “18k” simply means the piece contains 18 parts gold out of 24. Gold purity is measured on a 24‑karat scale, with 24k representing .999 fine gold. The types of gold most commonly seen in jewelry are 10k (41.7% pure), 14k (58.5% pure), and 18k (75% pure).
White gold is created by blending gold with pale metals like nickel, palladium, or silver to give it a bright, silvery tone.
Yellow gold is created by mixing gold with copper and silver.
Rose gold gets its warm color from a mix of gold and copper—typically around 75% gold and 25% copper.
Dental gold is usually yellow in color and used for crowns or small restorations. It generally falls in the 14k–18k range.
