Not sure whether your item is genuine sterling or just plated? Look for purity marks such as “925,” or “STERLING” or similar stamps that indicate real silver content.
In addition to Sterling you will find Coin silver that is marked "Coin" that has at least 90% purity. Another quick clue: sterling and coins silver is softer and bends more easily, while plated items tend to feel rigid.
